My husband just found out he was concieved using artificial insemination. His parents finally told him because he was diagnosed with a rare disease and they had to come clean that what he thought was his family medical history actually has nothing to do with him!

It seems like it’s impossible to find donor records from so long ago (he’s 34) and his parents are saying they’d love to help, but there’s nothing they can do. The doctor they used has obviously long ago retired and they’re acting like that’s a dead end.

Do you think it matters that he have his family medical history? Should we just focus on genetic testing? And is there anything we can do to track down records? So far the only thing I can think of is one of those 23andme kits, which I’ve already ordered.

It’s scary! It feels like the world is shifting under us, between the diagnosis and uncovering family secrets.
